Fewer patients receiving NHS dental treatment in the UK

Fewer patients are receiving treatment in NHS dental practices, according to newly-released statistics.

Data shows dental teams carried out 38.4 million courses of NHS treatment in 2019-20.

But this marks a 3.36% drop compared to the previous year.

This is despite a jump in the number of dentists carrying out activity. Statistics show 24,684 dentists performed NHS activity in 2019-20, an increase of 139 when compared to the previous year.

Regional disparities

Additionally, the data also exposes regional disparities. For example, 65 NHS clinical commissioning groups saw the number of dentists decrease over the past year.

And seven of these saw dentist numbers decline by 20% or more when compared to 2018-19.

Between 31 March 2019 and 31 March 2020, 58% of children had attended an NHS dentist in the previous 12 months. This figure stood at 49.6% for adults over the last two years.

Three quarters of female NHS workers report emotional stress during pandemic

One in five female NHS employees said they did not have access to the necessary PPE during the pandemic.

This is according to a new report that looks into the impact of the coronavirus crisis on women working in the NHS.

The data, carried out by the NHS Confederation and the Health and Care Women Leaders Network (HCWLN), points out that more than three quarters of the NHS workforce is made up of women.

Emotional and physical health

The survey found that almost 75% of participants reported that their role had caused them a greater negative impact than usual on their emotional wellbeing.

Additionally, more than half reported a negative impact on their physical health.

For those continuing to work in the health and social care sector, respondents said conflicting messages from the government and trusts have added to stress. Those in leadership roles also reported worry for their … Read the rest

What does the new NHS infection prevention guidance mean for dentistry?

New infection control guidance has been issued for healthcare settings in the UK, including dental practices.

In the latest information from the NHS and Public Health England (PHE), dentistry has been labelled a ‘medium-risk pathway’ in the face of COVID-19.

Definitions of this area are any care facility where:

  • Triaged/clinically assessed individuals are asymptomatic and are waiting a COVID-19 test result with no known recent COVID-19 contact
  • Testing is not required or feasible on asymptomatic individuals and infectious status is unknown
  • Asymptomatic individuals decline testing.

Other examples of ‘medium-risk pathways’ include GP surgeries, non-elective admissions, primary care facilities and care homes.

Same PPE guidance

Additionally, the personal protective equipment (PPE) requirement for staff in high and medium-risk pathways has not changed. An FFP3 or hood should still be worn by dental professionals carrying out AGPs.

Requirements for environmental cleaning and disinfection include:

  • Increased frequency of decontamination for all reusable non-invasive

British Fluoridation Society gathering momentum

Two high profile and highly experienced advocates for community water fluoridation are now joining the British Fluoridation Society.

Alan Johnson, former Labour MP and a Secretary of State for Health, is vice president and Barry Cockcroft, former chief dental officer for England, is joining the BFS council.

Both have history championing the fight for fluoridation in parliament. Alan Johnson supported the proposal to introduce it in Hull. While Barry worked tirelessly as CDO to introduce it in Southampton.

‘Alan joins a long line of high profile social justice campaigners who have added their name to a BFS vice president role,’ chair of the BFS, Steve Bedser, says.

‘Both Alan and Barry have a great record as water fluoridation advocates. I am confident that both will be great assets to the society.’

Dental Hygiene Prerequisites Vary Based On Degree Type

With the constant growth in the medical industry, the demand for Medical transcriptionists has also increased tremendously. Use of inexpensive lower quality labs: It is commonly accepted that work performed by the lab is just as crucial as the work by the surgeon and the restorative dentist for long-term success. Laboratory cost can be significant for quality prosthetic work, whether it’s a crown, bridge, veneer, or denture. Some labs offer special fees to the dentists for doing the work, like a “$95 monthly special” for the crown. Here is the catch: Quality laboratory work requires careful attention to details, communication with the dentist, precision fit, accurate margins, custom angulation and form of the abutment, and artistic porcelain work for a crown that looks good and functions well. All of this takes time and expertise, which is why a quality laboratory charges $225 to $350 just for the abutment and another … Read the rest

Evolutionary Advance?

Lagos is a port city located in South West corner of Nigeria. I personally have no religious preference. I’m not trying to promote either Creationism or Evolution’s explanation of earth’s origins. I simply think it would be wise to know exactly what goes on in scientific research, instead of blindly listening to whatever the scientific community says. Learn why they make the judgements they do. How do they determine evidence? What consists of a logical hypothesis? It’s all about philosophy, the philosophy of science; because as long as it is humans who are doing the scientific research, some element of human logic and human philosophy is going to have to be applied to find meaning to scientific findings. Therefore science is dependent upon the study of such things as logic and philosophy simply because understanding the human mind is dependent upon logic and philosophy. You can’t have science without a … Read the rest

Dealing With Difficult Patients In Your Dental Office

Once you graduate from dental school you are immediately licensed to practice. The DC Board of Dentistry regulates the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene in the District. The Board evaluates qualifications, administers exams, and recommends standards and procedures. Moreover, the Board issues licenses, receives and reviews complaints, requests investigations, conducts hearings, and issues an annual report. Hi Craig, your blog is great! Thanks for sharing your story. I’m 32 years old and I’ve decided to make a career change from Software Engineering to Physical Therapy. My heart just isn’t in it anymore, and I’ve chosen to pursue a degree in PT (I won’t bore you with the details as to how I arrived at this decision). Anyway, I’ll be finished with my last prerequisite class in May 2016 but I’m torn about when I should actually apply to a program. Being a non-traditional student, I don’t really know what … Read the rest

Despite the negative effects that virtual reality can bring to video gamers, there are positive uses for the technology. For example, the Oculus Rift could be used to train pilots in crash procedure without the danger of actually crashing a plane. This type of simulation could also be used for law enforcement or other first response workers. Athletes could use virtual reality for realistic training programs outside of team practices. Finally, virtual reality can allow people to experience activities that they would not be able to otherwise. Oxford Textbook Of Trauma And Orthopaedics

A medical assistant degree is a great way to improve your future and your career opportunities. A basic requirement for entry into almost any healthcare-related career is a command of medical terminology. The ability to recognize, understand, spell, and pronounce basic medical terms, identify medical abbreviations, and decipher unfamiliar words using roots, suffixes and prefixes is a necessary tool to perform well in any medical setting. Medical terminology courses are widely available in online, home study and instructor-led formats. Because medical technology advances rapidly, medical terminology evolves to keep pace. To stay on top of new terminology, consider taking the course again if you’ve taken it in the past. The rest of the world has, in effect, long supported and nurtured a technology industry that revolves around the US The main reason, of course, is the fact that much of the innovation in the tech industry has come out of … Read the rest

And yes, of course God could be in the remaining majority of knowledge we don’t have, but to this date we have zero evidence of that in spite of thousands of years of effort. The tentative conclusion, then, is that He does not exist while fully acknowledging that the jury is still out. On the other hand 100% or available evidence points to the idea that once life occurred the so-called “forces” (they aren’t really force at all, but the label is convenient) took over and produced all the different species on earth.
