At some point, humans began to use basic tools to clean and perform surgery on the human body. One of the most important areas of the human body is the mouth. Oral health and hygiene is a huge factor in the overall health of the body. Also, mouth pain tends to be worse than many other types of pain; therefore, it was inevitable that people would begin to use tools in their mouths to clean, repair, and even remove teeth. Use of stock (generic) abutments: The abutment is the extension that is attached to the implant and supports the crown. Stock abutments are manufactured by the implant companies and are available in several standard sizes. These are cheaper than the recommended custom abutments. The catch: Stock abutments do not provide the proper form and contour of a natural tooth. The cosmetic results are unpredictable, and hygiene may be difficult. Custom abutments have clear advantages and are recommended by every experienced prosthodontist, dentist, surgeon, and laboratory technician.

Greek medicine was so powerful, all-encompassing and successful that the Romans made few advances. For most of the duration of the Roman Empire, Greek physicians were employed. They enjoyed the status of free citizens and one of their number, Galen (Latin name Claudius Galenus, c. AD 130-201), combined the theory of the humours with his own studies in anatomy and physiology to produce a comprehensive medical encyclopedia, which remained a standard reference for more than 1000 years despite the fact that his anatomical descriptions, which were based on dissections he had carried out on animals, were riddled with errors. Rome’s only contribution to the history of medicine was its development of an elaborate public health system, entailing garbage and sewage disposal, public baths, and a good fresh water supply. This is necessary for in order to assess anything, you have to make certain assumptions. However, the more I learned about the philosophy of science and exactly how scientists determine what qualifies as evidence, or what qualifies as fact, or what qualifies as theory, I found it to be unnervingly dependent upon personal judgement and unproven theories than upon proven facts; indisputable facts. The purpose of this study was to compare surgical recommendations made by clinicians experienced in gait analysis when using information provided from the clinical examination and videotape, with recommendations made after the addition of kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic (EMG) data. Ninety-one patients with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy were seen in the gait laboratory as part of the surgical decision-making process. Experienced clinicians reviewed video and clinical examination data for each patient and made surgical recommendations. Joint kinematics and kinetics and EMG data were then reviewed, and a second set of surgical recommendations was made. Comparisons between these recommendations showed that the addition of gait-analysis data resulted in changes in surgical recommendations in 52% of the patients, with an associated reduction in cost of surgery, not to mention the human impact of an inappropriate surgical decision, which is more likely without gait analysis. When changes in recommendations were made, an increase in surgical recommendations was observed for the gastrocnemius (59%) and rectus femoris (65%), whereas decreases were observed for the hamstrings (61%), psoas (78%), hip adductors (83%), femur (86%), and tibia (64%).
